{"id":122,"date":"2013-02-08T20:29:14","date_gmt":"2013-02-09T02:29:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.discovery.wisc.edu\/ds501\/?p=122"},"modified":"2013-02-16T16:27:30","modified_gmt":"2013-02-16T22:27:30","slug":"assignment-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.discovery.wisc.edu\/ds501\/2013\/02\/08\/assignment-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Assignment 2"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This assignment is to warm us up to bringing models into the CAVE. \u00a0We will walk through everyone&#8217;s models in class on 2\/21\/13. \u00a0This assignment will consist of two steps.<\/p>\n<p><strong>More Information<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Your model should be built so that we can walk around it in VR. \u00a0Therefore models should be at least room size.<\/li>\n<li>Units matter in the CAVE. \u00a0Make sure your models are in\u00a0<strong>meters<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>The center of the CAVE is at (17&#8217;x17&#8242;) in our model loading program. \u00a0Not really sure why but if you want the user to start in the center of the CAVE offset your model by that amount<\/li>\n<li>Make sure you bring all\u00a0associated files (i.e. textures files) with you<\/li>\n<li>The Trimble (aka Google) Warehouse is a good source of pre-built models. \u00a0If you use these models:\n<ul>\n<li>provide documentation of where you got the model<\/li>\n<li>At least <strong>one object in the environment should be built by you<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Due for class 2\/14\/13<\/strong><br \/>\nDescribe the environment you want to build (a few sentences) and have one piece of concept artwork (e.g. a photograph, a sketch, or an initial rendering of the environment you would like to create). \u00a0We will go around the room and present the ideas in class.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Due for class 2\/21\/13<\/strong><br \/>\nBring your model on to class on an external drive. \u00a0We will load up the models and walk through them in the CAVE.\u00a0 Be prepared to answer the following questions:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>What tools you used to make your model?<\/li>\n<li>What object was the most difficult step in the process?<\/li>\n<li>If you had more time what you would do next?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>We will use OpenSceneGraph for our model loading. \u00a0A list of supported file formats can be found at:<a href=\"http:\/\/my.safaribooksonline.com\/book\/-\/9781849512824\/saving-and-loading-files\/ch10lvl1sec03\">\u00a0http:\/\/my.safaribooksonline.com\/book\/-\/9781849512824\/saving-and-loading-files\/ch10lvl1sec03<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Common formats that work well:<br \/>\n3ds, dae, dxf, ive, obj, ply, stl<\/p>\n<p>For people using 3DS Max.\u00a0 Here is a tutorial on how to bake lighting.\u00a0 I encourage you to try it out<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/kb.worldviz.com\/articles\/1222\">http:\/\/kb.worldviz.com\/articles\/1222<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This assignment is to warm us up to bringing models into the CAVE. \u00a0We will walk through everyone&#8217;s models in class on 2\/21\/13. \u00a0This assignment will consist of two steps.
