{"id":376,"date":"2014-04-30T03:30:34","date_gmt":"2014-04-30T03:30:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.discovery.wisc.edu\/projects\/?p=376"},"modified":"2014-04-30T03:30:34","modified_gmt":"2014-04-30T03:30:34","slug":"from-crisis-comes-opportunity","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.discovery.wisc.edu\/projects\/2014\/04\/30\/from-crisis-comes-opportunity\/","title":{"rendered":"From crisis comes opportunity&#8230;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>(Sorry for the lateness of the post &#8211; I didn&#8217;t realize that internet connectivity was going to be such a problem in Canada.)<\/p>\n<p>The exhibition piece has been unfortunately plagued with failure.<\/p>\n<p>1) Muscle wires:\u00a0 I&#8217;ve come to agree with one blogger who called muscle wires &#8220;a solution in search of a problem.&#8221;\u00a0 They&#8217;re extremely interesting in theory and have great potential.\u00a0 However, their limitations make them only useful in very specific circumstances, none of which apply to my project.<\/p>\n<p>2) Felt:\u00a0 Even in the &#8220;easy&#8221; part of the project, I managed to utterly fail.\u00a0 Although the print looked outstanding as I executed it, after steam setting and rinsing I found that the first color had bled and run all over the fabric and the thiox had eaten holes in the wool.\u00a0 When I attempted to reprint on a new panel, my screen emulsion blew out during rinsing and I accidentally over processed my felt, creating a piece that was unusably small.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.discovery.wisc.edu\/projects\/files\/2014\/04\/IMG_0230.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-377\" alt=\"IMG_0230\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.discovery.wisc.edu\/projects\/files\/2014\/04\/IMG_0230.jpg\" width=\"960\" height=\"720\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.discovery.wisc.edu\/projects\/files\/2014\/04\/IMG_0230.jpg 960w, https:\/\/blogs.discovery.wisc.edu\/projects\/files\/2014\/04\/IMG_0230-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.discovery.wisc.edu\/projects\/files\/2014\/04\/IMG_0230-400x300.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 960px) 100vw, 960px\" \/><\/a><strong>Plan B:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Since the piece is being installed on Thursday, I have obviously moved onto Plan B.\u00a0 I ordered 5 meters of addressable RBG LED strip.\u00a0 These will be mounted in rings and programmed to light in a circular &#8220;chase&#8221; pattern when triggered, thereby imitating the circular pulse from the inspiration video.\u00a0 Adafruit has a very user friendly set of libraries available that I am using for the Arduino code.\u00a0 As for the actual textile, I am in the process of printing a new panel using pigments, rather than the dye\/thiox combination.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Robe a la Foudre:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In other news, I showed the completed lightning gown at the convention I attended this weekend.\u00a0 It worked even better than I could have hoped and it looked amazing on stage!\u00a0 I received a Judges&#8217; Choice award for &#8220;Blowing the Judges Away&#8221; as well as a special commendation for excellence in dye work.\u00a0 I&#8217;ll post video as soon as I have access to it.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.discovery.wisc.edu\/projects\/files\/2014\/04\/1969387_10154105195850370_6687798253762406846_n.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-378\" alt=\"1969387_10154105195850370_6687798253762406846_n\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.discovery.wisc.edu\/projects\/files\/2014\/04\/1969387_10154105195850370_6687798253762406846_n.jpg\" width=\"720\" height=\"960\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.discovery.wisc.edu\/projects\/files\/2014\/04\/1969387_10154105195850370_6687798253762406846_n.jpg 720w, https:\/\/blogs.discovery.wisc.edu\/projects\/files\/2014\/04\/1969387_10154105195850370_6687798253762406846_n-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 720px) 100vw, 720px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>(Sorry for the lateness of the post &#8211; I didn&#8217;t realize that internet connectivity was going to be such a problem in Canada.)
