{"id":729,"date":"2016-03-28T22:33:25","date_gmt":"2016-03-29T03:33:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.discovery.wisc.edu\/wearable2016\/?p=729"},"modified":"2016-03-28T22:34:00","modified_gmt":"2016-03-29T03:34:00","slug":"weekly-update-2-13","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.discovery.wisc.edu\/wearable2016\/2016\/03\/28\/weekly-update-2-13\/","title":{"rendered":"Weekly Update #2"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.discovery.wisc.edu\/wearable2016\/files\/2016\/03\/magnets-snaps-and-magnetic-snaps-e1459222325889.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-732\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-732\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.discovery.wisc.edu\/wearable2016\/files\/2016\/03\/magnets-snaps-and-magnetic-snaps-e1459222325889.jpg\" alt=\"magnets, snaps, and magnetic snaps\" width=\"1208\" height=\"1096\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Done this week:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>More parts came in: now I have a full assortment of magnets, snaps, and magnetic snaps to play with.<\/p>\n<p>(Old snaps in upper right, lower left; also, weird tiny or customizable size perfboards in upper right.)<\/p>\n<p>Poked at the fasteners with a multimeter to test resistance. \u00a0They may all be viable, or I may not know how to use my multimeter.<\/p>\n<p>Ideas for external appearance of the modules are becoming a little more concrete. \u00a0What I can produce on a 3D printer is a bit less so.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Issues:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m still less sure of how the textile part should work; how and why are the modules connecting to it?<\/p>\n<p>How: Magnets in the cloth may be demagnetized or crack if run through a washer\/dryer; metal plates may wear the surrounding cloth. \u00a0Snaps are hopefully built to mitigate these problems at least a bit. \u00a0Is there anything I should do at the interface between snaps and cloth to make it more durable?<\/p>\n<p>Why: Still nothing concrete here. \u00a0Simple neopixel\u00a0pattern is the fallback. \u00a0Though maybe being a medium to convey power and signal between modules is enough. \u00a0(note to self: could the pathways between active modules somehow light up?)<\/p>\n<p>Come to that: Still need some way to cut power to inactive fasteners &#8212; if there&#8217;s no module attached, we don&#8217;t want something accidentally completing that circuit.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>A plan for the next\u00a0week of work:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Could stand to further test the fasteners\u00a0for conductivity.<\/p>\n<p>Need to sew the testbed.<\/p>\n<p>Need to make some cases, and test attaching them to the testbed.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Done this week: &nbsp; More parts came in: now I have a full assortment of magnets, snaps, and magnetic snaps to play with.
