Sixth Sense – Due 11/27 – Fourth Posting

Sixth Sense 4th group posting, for Thanksgiving week.

  1. What each individual in the group worked on over the last week
    • All four of us met in the lab this week (11/19/2016 – 12:00pm – 3:00pm).
    • Searched and added more videos pertaining to social causes such as Clouds over Sidra, Sudan Hunger crisis, Nepal Earthquake.
    • Experimented with text placement
  2. A description of the accomplishments made
    • Text is placed at 3 places in the video at angles of 0, 120 and 240 degrees. This ensures the user can read the text no matter which side he turns to. A drawback we noted was large amounts of text could not be displayed as it ruined the experience by shattering presence.
    • Also text seemed to block certain elements in the video. We felt that it was difficult to focus on the video as well as reading the text. Overall the experience was ok if the text was just a phrase or a statement, but anything above 6-8 words felt too long and reduced presence.
  3. A description of the problems encountered (this section may be short for this week as we are still very early)
    • Text interposition at the correct position is a challenge we still face. Controlling the distance of the text from the user becomes difficult. Figure 1 displays an example of the problem.
    • Interposition of text without ruining experience as described above seems to be difficult. For this reason we have thought of 2 alternate ways of displaying the text :
      • Display text and video in alternate separate frames.
      • Move the text with the camera. Allow the user to zoom in/out or move it using the controller.
      • We intend to experiment with these 2 methods in the following week.

  1. Plans for the upcoming week
    • Continue to work on accurate text placement/interposition in each video frame.
    • Try to display the text in a separate frame.
    • Experiment with spatial simulation of audio sources in different directions in the scene.
    • Try out the 360 degree camera to capture our own videos.
  2. At least one piece of media related to your work (image, video, audio, etc)
