Discussion:

Post 1 (Pick 3, write one paragraph for each and indicate which question you are answering):

  1. Do you agree with Slater’s breakdown between PI and Psi?  Do you agree with Slater that these concepts are orthogonal? Explain why.
  2. Slater writes “The illusion [PI], given the right physical set-up and the appropriate SCs in a particular modality, is automatic—it can coexist with different (but not contradictory) sensations in another modality.”  Do you agree? Explain why.
  3. Do you agree that breaks in Psi are harder to overcome than breaks in PI? Explain.
  4. In the section “PI in lower order systems” Slater tackles the question brought up in class on presence (PI in this case) in 2D games.  Write either a paragraph stating why you agree or disagree with his arguments.
  5. The paper references the Milgram Experiment (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Milgram_experiment).  How do you feel about this experiment being run in Virtual Reality?
  6. Select a topic in this article that you find interesting, dubious, confusing or curious and explain why.  Write at least a paragraph of explanation and add citations if warranted.

Post 2 (Pick 3, write one paragraph for each and indicate which question you are answering):

  1. Do you believe that violent VR scenarios are fundamentally different from videos games and films?  Argue why or why not
  2. How do you believe the consequences (or lack of them) of actions in VR relate to the transference of learning for skills and behaviors?
  3. The author states, “designers of VR systems have the moral duty to reflect on the way behavioral options and their consequences are designed in them”  Do you agree or disagree.  Discuss.
  4. Do you believe that VR systems need to live up to “standards of accuracy”?  Discuss.
  5. Do you belive that “biased representations” are more damaging in VR than in other forms of media? Discuss.
  6. Select a topic in this article that you find interesting, dubious, confusing or curious and explain why. Write at least a paragraph of explanation and add citations if warranted.
