Dec 8 Update

  • This week:
    • Summary: We met several times this week to continue troubleshooting our spatial mapping and asset placement. We focused on documenting our experiments and after limited success, we moved on to creating a full build of our model in Unity of what we wanted to accomplish, without using a spatial map to show what our design was. We also began working on gestures.
    • Sunny, Jamie, and Sara continued to work on placing more assets in the Hololens within the spatial map of our room. This week we tried using gravity to get our objects on the floor.
    • Brandee and Sara helped with testing and troubleshooting our project with the Hololens. We also worked on Hololens tutorials on gaze and gestures.
    • Brandee began composing our final project post and creating presentation deliverables.

  • Accomplishments:
    • We were able to place a chair, desk, and box on the floor with decent consistency! We used gravity to get objects to stay on the floor instead of sinking in.

    • We learned how users can interact with objects in our room. We were able to move pictures on the wall within the Hololens. You can tap and hold on the object to drag it around and place where you want.
    • We remapped our room to get more accurate floors and walls.
    • We started building a Unity model of our game to show our design.

  • Problems encountered:
    • We loaded a previous map (correct in Unity) but the Hololens incompletely mapped the room. We then remapped the room to make the floor/walls more accurate, but the floor had slanted planes beneath.
    • The floor mesh is broken.
    • Chair asset was falling off the scene (in Unity and Hololens). The first time, the chair was tilted and not on the floor. Then, we tried to put the chair right next to the desk and then on top of the desk, but it was inconclusive if this worked because the chair kept falling off because of gravity.

    • Assets that we placed were sometimes shaking or moving. We think this has to do with the poor floor mapping’s effect on gravity. We tried to freeze the rotation to keep it from moving, but it didn’t keep it still. It started only shaking in the x, y, and z axes.
    • The Hololens tutorial is giving us lots of build errors for working on gaze and gestures. It’s telling us that the Unity player name space cannot be found.
    • We tried to calibrate the Hololens and update the sensors to help with our spatial mapping issues, but it didn’t help.
  • Plans for the upcoming week:
    • Discuss with Kevin in class on Thursday how to best approach finishing and presenting our experiments with the Hololens. We need to talk to flesh out our specific plans further.
    • Jamie will continue working on the Unity build.
