Final Project Post

This project was an attempt to recreate a wearable illusion that a person is, physically, an android.

It consisted of a bodysuit that all of the robotic pieces were attached to including all of the electronics. Included are: over 200 LEDs in the chest, arms, and back; 6 servos, 3 in each forearm; and 2 DC motors simulating engines on his back. The lights and the engines are turned on and off through buttons embedded into the first finger of each hand. The servos activate from a flex sensor in each of the middle fingers of each hand.  Normally, they lay but when the hand is clenched into a fist, they expand up and outward, intending to reveal lights and details below.

Much of this project came together exactly as I had planned, as I had been planning to make it long before I actually did. The major difficulty posed was the amount of wiring needed to run everything in the costume and disguising it all. In the future, as I plan to perfect the idea, I will be working on streamlining all the wiring to make it easier to get in and out of. Another issue i ran into was less that sufficient power consumption. To run everything I need to, my original plan for batteries would only run 80% of the outfit for about 10 seconds. This means I will have to look at more effective power planning in the future.

All in all, I would say the project was a major success, but in its current state it is only at about 75% of what I want it to be. I hope to make it reach 100% by the end of this upcoming summer.
